Reflection on the BDRRM activity
Interview with official in charge with the BDRRM

When I planned this interview with the barangay official/s I was expecting to learn more about disaster preparedness of the smaller units of community in the country. It is because most of my knowledge regarding disaster preparedness is for the whole country and/or whole cities, I do not know much when it comes to smaller community units such as barangays. From the interview, I noticed that they really did a good job on scanning their area and looking for potential hazards when a natural calamity comes to their place. They know which places are the most flood-prone when there is a heavy downpour of rain. They also have the knowledge of where it would be more dangerous if an earthquake would hit because the area is near an active fault. This is in Brgy. Ugong Pasig which is near the West Valley Fault. There are houses that are built along the area of the fault which is hazardous and the flood-prone areas are always filled with many people driving through the roads and streets. This area has these risks and issues because of their geographical location in the country; they are near an active fault and to some bodies of waters. However, their evacuation areas are in safer places so that people would have a refuge when disaster strikes. They also have the enough tools to respond when a calamity do strike their area. It is also known that they conduct emergency drills so that the people in the community has knowledge regarding what they should do when a disaster strikes them, especially in the most unexpected time. From this activity I have learned that officials of the community has one of the most vital roles in ensuring the safety of the place that they are managing. Another thing I realized is that disaster and calamity is something that is inevitable anywhere in this planet because it is a part of nature's normal and natural processes, unless it is worsened by man-made factors such as pollution that causes global warming that leads to storms stronger than usual. It is important that these are addressed because everyone who are under the authority of the officials have the right to have the sense of security and safety even with knowing that a calamity or disaster might strike. I can contribute to reducing the danger of calamities by participating seriously and properly during emergency drills. If I do so, I would have the knowledge regarding what I have to do during emergencies and I can hand down that knowledge to other people so that awareness could easily spread throughout the community.
